From the Inside Flap
The writer with a claim to being the world's foremost literary escape artist is back, with an intoxicating novel about the business and pleasure of wine, set in his beloved Provence. Max Skinner has recently lost his job at a London financial firm and just as recently learned that he has inherited his late uncle's vineyard in Provence. On arrival he finds the climate delicious, the food even better, and two of the locals ravishing. Unfortunately, the wine produced on his new property is swill. Why then are so many people interested in it? Enter a beguiling Californian who knows more about wine than Max does-and may have a better claim to the estate. Fizzy with intrigue, bursting with local color and savor, A Good Year is Mayle at his most entertaining.

Having viewed the movie several times, I became enchanted by the setting; the chateau, the vines, and the town of Provence. Watching the credits roll by several times I discovered the movie was not an original idea, but based upon the book by Peter Mayle. Off to Amazon to find the book. For a reasonable price, I downloaded for the Kindle software and began to enjoy the book as much as the movie. The book has several interesting twists not present in the movie version. However, both are excellent. I will not reveal the twists, as that would spoil the read. I suggest viewing the movie first. The characters in the movie are played by first rate actors and remembering their faces and mannerisms while reading the book make it all the more enjoyable and memorable. The movie and the book complement each other perfectly. Peter Mayle is an excellent storyteller.
This book had a totally surprising twist for me. For once, I was not prepared for what happened with the "bad guys". I've recently discovered Peter Mayle, thoroughly enjoying his nostalgic, romantic view of Parisienne countryside. His descriptions take me away in every sense...smells, flavors, sights, sounds. His people have all the human foibles one has in real life, but they entertain your sympathy whether they are bad guys or good ones. It is delightful to see someone "at the top" economically get his comeuppance, and Mayle does that hysterically.
Like some of the other reviewers, I decided to read this book after seeing the movie several times. A good year (the movie) is one of my favorite movies of all time. Often when I like a movie, I will then read the book to get a more detailed story, and while they’re usually some changes, I am always glad I read the book. This book is so very different from the movie I don’t how it can have the same name. The main characters have the same names, some of the elements are the same but the story line goes off in a whole different direction, many of the character’s names are changed, even the vineyard. I’ve been a huge fan of the late great Peter Maybe for years but this was a disappointment to read . It seemed like the author was squeezing every American Cliche into its short storyline.. I thought the plot was carried out sloppy and too quickly the story just ended leaving me a little confused. My favorite aspect of the movie was the rich relationship between Uncle Henry and Max which is completely downplayed in the book.
Entirely different from the resulting movie. The movie was better, except when it wasn't, meaning that when the story was modified to create a more compelling movie, a whole lot of stitches were dropped. In the film, there are places where the story simply disconnects due to sloppy writing and sloppier direction. Sad, as it's a great flick and has a fun feel to it. Russell Crowe as Cary Grant. The book is a far simpler storyline, a bit forced. An easy read. If you love wine, read it over the course of a couple of afternoons.
I rarely say this, but the movie was MUCH better. Had expected the book to be, as they usually are, full of more details, additional characters and sideline stories, and evocative imagery. Max in the book is dull and unremarkable and you will care not whether he gets the girl. The charm is missing entirely.
I had seen the movie and there are many differences with the book, but that makes the book a little more substantial. The book is enjoyable light reading, overly positive in all aspects but that did not detract from the enjoyment of a story set in provencale France. It evokes a great sense of romantic French countryside and makes you wish you were there. I had never heard of Peter Mayle but I will definitely be reading more of his books. Highly recommended if you want to get away from the thrillers and mystery that seems to abound with novels these days.
I've read all Peter Mayle's books. I love them and this one was no exception. They're well written, delightful in content, and I always come away wanting to visit the places he writes about. Think I'll go back and read the older books again -- it's been 20 years or so.
This is borderline chick lit, but enjoyable nonetheless - and I don't mean to dismiss all chick lit as not worth reading. Be that as it may, I recommend this as a pleasant way to pass a plane ride, an afternoon or any time you want something you can enjoy without sucking you in so deep you can't put it down.
