This is a very comprehensive introduction to yoga: the history, the practice, the terminology, the equipment, the poses, and the reasoning and benefits of all of the above. It's a lot to take in for a newbie like myself. While both of my daughters have been practicing yoga for years, and my older daughter is a yoga instructor, I have been dragging my feet about getting started.I'm out of shape and getting older, but this book gives me hope. This is actually a few different books put together. It's called a boxed set, but since I got the Kindle version, there's no box other than the one I use to read it. Each author has his or her own take on yoga, and all give helpful and insightful information about the practice.I am personally overwhelmed at the prospect of a public yoga class, but I have amassed all of the tools I need to get started, and with the guidance I have found in this publication, I am going to give it a try. It also helps that I've rearranged my family room and now I actually have room to practice. As long as the dogs don't try to lick my face while I'm trying to do the downward dog, I'll be all set.I still have some reading to do, but so far I am enjoying this publication a lot. I'm going to start out slowly and hopefully build my strength, stamina, and flexibility. Then my ultimate goal is to take some classes from my daughter and hopefully join a local studio.I received this publication free in return for my honest review. This could be better, a lot of poses were repeated throughout the set of books. In the first book there were no pictures to go with the poses and some of them had wording that could be confusing. In the second book it just seemed random and not well put together, and in the section about choosing a mat it says and I quote, "If you are to huge than the standard-sized yoga mat, you might consider choosing a larger mat." All I can say is WHAT? I actually wrote it down to read to my husband to find out if I was just me or if it really sounded bad. The third book is slightly better as it has a photo at the beginning of each pose that shows how the pose looks. It describes the pose and then the health benefits of the pose and then beginners tips for the pose. The fourth book was on meditation. I chose this book for yoga poses not meditation and there is no way it has over 100 poses. It has a bunch of the same ones repeated in each book and there might be 20 total. I had a really hard time focusing and reading this book because of the wording and just the way it was put together. It's like listening to someone rambling on and on, and repeating what they are saying over and over and not really saying much of anything.I received a discount for my honest and unbiased review, this review is my own opinion based on my experience with reading this book. No one paid me for this review.
As a yoga instructor I found this book to be lacking.Let me start by saying this book is actually several small books, as described.It provides many nice points of view but it also varies highly in quality from author to author.There is a lot of good information for a first time yogi,such as how to prepare for a class, but anyone who has been to even one class will likely get very little from this series.My main disappointment was that there were not very many poses described in the book, and not all in one place. This book could not be used to create a home practice by someone who has not done yoga before.There were also very few photos to go along with the poses and many of the photos are blurry. I believe it is extremely important to have a visual reference for the poses being described so that a new practitioner does not accidentally injure themselves by misinterpretation. The writing style is also somewhat simplistic and lacking, even some grammatical errors.Overall, if you want to read about how to get ready for a class and breathing/meditation techniques, this book is ok, but you can likely find higher quality resources online for free.I was provided this book free of charge in return for an unbiased review.
9/10.I have a lot of trouble attending Yoga classes in my life. Not only am I just not in a position/at a point where I am comfortable with myself in public situations such as yoga class but I also do not have the time for classes such as that. This has helped me at home to really be able to work on my yoga practicing without the discomfort and time taken to go to a class. I do yoga in the privacy of my own home and this has been a wonderful help to me. It is very informative and a nice reference for many different poses that can help in the long run with many different pains or problems you may have. Definitely worth buying for the price tag that the author/publisher has on this and while this says Yoga for beginners it could be used by anyone looking for references for yoga poses and positions.Overall very useful and I have enjoyed it.I received this at discount in exchange for my honest thoughts and review.
