I'm totally in!' " Santa, happy that Shmelf cares for Jewish children, decks him out in a blue and white outfit and sends him out with a Jewish reindeer to ensure a good holiday for eight nights in December (some years in November). Bright, colorful illustrations and a perky couplet scheme make this a viable, if odd, storytime title, but somehow the message just seems awkward and leaves a patronizingly bad taste. What a wonderful book for adults and children alike! As a classroom teacher, it helps me explain to my students that not everyone celebrates Christmas, and that it’s okay that they don’t. I am surprise by the negative reviews about people being concerned that Christmas is being forced onto Jews. I didn’t get that at all from this book. To me, rather, it reminds small children that while Christmas is special to some, other holidays exist that are special to others. It teaches love for all and helps explain differences between people in a clever, child appropriate way. The author not only explains Hanukkah, but also gives the story a clever character and helps children to see that differences can be fun and not scary or bad. From a teacher who works hard to teach acceptance, love, and tolerance...thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
I have a Jewish 3 year old, and having been a Jewish 3 year old myself, December kind of blows. It's not like you can hide your children away from Santa or the excitement of their friends during the month. This book is helpful in letting a Jewish three year olds believe in a little winter magic while remaining staunchly kosher.

The book itself is ADORABLE. Loved the story however it arrived with the front covered completely torn and wrinkled but no damage to the box. I’m disappointed because I was very excited to share it with my preschool class but will be returning due to damage.
Fun book for all. Nice for interfaith families as it plays off of Christmas elf’s and santa. New tradition book!
This book is adorable! A super fun way to explain to our 3 year old that we celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas. Wish there was an actual Schmelf like the elf on the shelf to use to motivate good behavior for Hanukkah.

My kids really liked this cute story. Have to be open to the idea mixing the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays, but otherwise very cute.
