This book is an easy read. The language is simple and human. This is a programming book written for the novice who wants to get a grasp on Excel VBA programming. I've read the first two chapters at this point and I feel like I've learned a good bit and it has stuck. I don't feel like I have to go back and study a lot since I apply it as I read it.I really enjoy the practices that goes along with what you're learning. There's no better way to learn that actually doing it!
As a total rookie when it comes to programming, this book was easy to follow. My only complaint is the Author seems to put forth less effort as the material gets harder to grasp. In the beginning he really breaks it down to a science and walks you through every step of the process and explaining what is happening along the way. The first time that you are required to participate and create something on your own spreadsheet, he even asks you how how you'd go about making the font italic so you could actually start doing and learning. I don't think that happens again during the rest of the book. The beginning was very well written and I feel that if he would have taken as much time explaining how an array works as he did for a macro, I would have enjoyed it and learned so much more.
As a professional VBA developer I can tell you that this book is what I recommend anyone who is a non-programmer wanting to learn Excel VBA to improve their productivity. It is fantastic. I have taught sales guys to use this to generate simple Excel VBA demos and tools for improving their own productivity.
This book is an easy read and is a great way to give yourself a crash course in VBA programming. My one gripe is that there isn't a ton of exercises or applications for the material you're learning. I've since bought a bigger, thicker book that has code-along exercises which I think makes it a lot easier to understand what you're doing. I learn by doing, so that has helped some of the commands "stick" with me better. Still, I really liked how this gave a quick, often humorous overview of an often difficult topic, and it did help me put in place a process automation at work that ended up saving me several hours of labor weekly, so there's that.
I needed to learn VBA quickly! This book was exactly what I needed. I have programming experience so this primer was perfect. Even if you don't have any programming experience, reading this book will most definitely give you what you need to get started. It provides a good foundation and understanding of VBA so you can move on to further hone your skills. Oh, and there are a lot of code examples in the book and on the companion web site.
Well-organized and well-presented... there are a few confusing entries, but very few. Unfortunately the links to online material are wrong. I finally found some of it on the Dummies site, but only for Chapters 10 and above. Frustrating!The "Dummies" web site doesn't show this edition only a very old (2007 I think) one with no indication a newer edition exists.
Not much here. Okay to get your feet wet. If you want to realy become a VBA programmer, get the real book "Excel 2013 Power Programming with VBA" by the same author. It is a 3 times larger volume and contains 3 times a much information for just a few dollars more.
Not very advanced. See inside cover to determine if you already know these topics. For someone who already had coding experience in C++, it is a great guide for learning syntax but if you have no prior knowledge this book could be confusing.
