I came across a used version of this 3rd edition which was in very good shape, so I bought that one instead of new, but I would have purchased a new copy had I not stumbled upon the pre-owned one. As one who is studying vacuum tube electronics on his own, along with some other electronic devices, I thought this dictionary would be a very handy reference. I am not disappointed at all! Not only is this a very useful book with loads of definitions covering electronics, vacuum tube and other analog items, as well as video and film industry terms, but the definitions are very clear and easy to understand. The author also lets his wonderful sense of humor show through in many instances. He includes a definition of the word "Fiddle," although I'm not sure why, unless it's just to share Ambrose Bierce's definition of: "An instrument to tickle human ears by friction of a horse's tail over the entrails of a dead cat." Mr. White does not leave us without his own humorous take on some subjects either. Trust me, dictionaries are notoriously boring tomes. By including gems such as this here and there, Mr. White almost persuades the reader to seriously peruse the entire volume for more of the same. It is at the outset however, a very useful dictionary indeed, and an extremely valuable reference book to add to any electronics library. Many definitions go into more depth for a fuller understanding of a term than one might expect; sometimes the author will even give a bit of history on a particular subject, which is often a nice bonus. Many terms are defined extensively; for example, "Pink Noise" is not just a simple one or two sentence explanation one might find in any ordinary dictionary, but in this book it is about 4 paragraphs totaling about a half page. Apparently there's a LOT more to pink noise than I knew, and it's all really good stuff. Additionally, the author has added a good deal of extremely helpful information is a series of 11 appendices at the end of the book. This is a great resource for anyone wishing to know more about the audio world, and an excellent reference to keep handy. I highly recommend it.
Lots of words to look up for anything you need for audio wording. Example: XLR or RCA cables. What is a "cable", any word on the audio/recording business they have.
Incredible tool for all those interested with the ins and outside of audio technology
The Audio Dictionary has a reserved spot on my desk. I have had it only a few weeks and already it looks as if I have had it for five years. I find myself constantly refering to it for specification writing, white papers and design/bid documents. Gary and Glen have really outdone themselves in creating this masterful work.
The dictionary is very useful for audio basic when you need a quick answer for certain words. I recommend it.
The Audio Dictionary is a great book for anyone who's looking for a concise, clear explanation of any audio-related term. It's not (and does not pretend to be) a complete treaty like the Handbook for Sound Engineers, but offers a quick and reliable solution for those questions for which you don't have an answer from the top of your head and don't want to spend 2 hours reading the complete scientific explanation.I consider it a must-have for any Audio Engineer who takes his profession seriously and have at least one copy in the library of each school we operate in Spain.
