The book is short and really well written. The first part is David's story, humble beginnings and even surprise about Hobby Lobby's success. The middle gives chunks of wisdom learned from the trenches and tested now with several generations. The Greens are humble by reputation, as well as in the pages. This is a great example of a family legacy lived with much.In my mind they sum up the book well in a section in the epilogue. Here is a longer quote."Our hope is that you'll take action. These are the basic ideas:-We are not owners of anything. God owns everything.-God wants us to be good stewards of everything he's put in our hands.-We all have wealth--our intellectual capital, our social capital, our emotional capital, our spiritual capital, and our financial capital.-Stewardship produces responsibility: as stewards, we need to be found faithful.-The great joy of stewardship is generosity: giving it away because we get it all back again in the form of joy."Highly recommend it to you.
My husband and I have been at a point of trying to understand how best to begin to giving away that which we have accumulated together. David Green's book was extremely informative in providing guidance to us, both as Christians and as heads of our family. Mr. Green reminds us that we are only stewards of what God has provided and that looking to God's will and wisdom in giving is the correct and proper thing to do.In looking at giving to others, the book provides excellent guidance on what to use as criteria in choosing groups/individuals who are trustworthy and can succeed. While our possessions are miniscule compared to that of Mr. Green, he rightly reminds us that most of us in the United States are among the wealthiest people in the world. It behooves us to use wisdom when passing on that which God has placed into our hands.Mr. Green also provides some excellent thoughts on how to “pass the baton†of a business or inheritance to your family. I especially liked that his solution involved discussion with and agreement by of a good portion of those family members who, in the normal course of life, would have expected to inherit the family business outright. On a personal level, as an individual who loves arts and crafts, I have often frequented Hobby Lobby over the years. However, I knew nothing about the individuals who started the business other than they appeared to be Christians – which I inferred mostly from their being closed on Sundays. It was very interesting and inspiring to read some of the history behind how the store began and grew. It was also very beautiful to read how Mr. Green was inspired, both in business and in family, by the love of God his mother instilled in him as he grew. I can only hope that someday my own children and grandchildren will remember me with some portion of the love and respect which Mr. Green gives to his mother.
I am so impressed with David Green's desire to serve God and to teach his family to do so as well. He seems to truly have a servant's heart and a desire to give to those who will benefit the most. I am taking in everything he is saying and looking at it from a Biblical perspective. I have always been a giver. I love to give. But, I have to admit that I have never put giving into such a structured perspective before. I give of my tithes and offerings in a structured manner, but have never thought about putting my giving to others and organizations into a more structured framework. I am now convinced that I need a plan to make my giving something greater than it has been up to this point. This is an excellent book!
As a Christian and family business founder/owner/steward I found David Green's book biblical, enlightening, practical and encouraging. Green concisely and by example reflects a Christian's responsibility to his/her employees, correctly identifies who truly owns the business and what therefore is the most beneficial distribution of company profits for the benefit of humanity, the company and the family. He also details how to establish an effective succession legacy plan for the maximum benefit of the company, the people it serves and subsequent generations of family members. The lessons the Green family has learned and the plans and processes they have put in place in their founding generations are truly counter-cultural but yet reflect timeless wisdom for the building and sustaining of any family founded enterprise.
David Green does not just talk about stewardship, he lives it and runs Hobby Lobby by Christian principals, including giving a large portion of the company profits to charities. I was impressed how it is a family business and he is teaching his children and grandchildren how to run the company when he steps down, but more importantly the reason the company exists, which is to support their employees and the charities. Truly inspirational, and a wonderful testimony of what God can do when you turn everything over to Him. I like his many references to scripture throughout the book which tells us the basis of his beliefs and practices, they are not David's ideas, they are following God's plan for their life and their business. Highly recommended. This is his second book. I also enjoyed "Not just a Hobby".
This book is a MUST READ. Not only do the principles discussed apply to everyone, if they are implemented into our daily lives, we will find joy and happiness all around us! Steps are provided at the end of the book to allow for the principles to be discussed, then put into a "game plan" that will bring positive results. No wonder David Green was not afraid to take on the USA government & take his case to the Supreme Court, and WIN! Our founding fathers believed in these principles, it took a rare businessman like David to apply them and he found himself wonderfully blessed. He realized that once he understood who owns his blessings he could not out-give the provider of these gifts!! Jerry Nuerge, Family Wealth Advocate, Center for Family Conversations.
