This book has two troublesome patterns that distract from the remaining content: errors and opinions.The more noticeable of the two are factual errors that seem to be present in a noticeable percentage of stories. The errors are sometimes insignificant, but can also go to the core of the topic.While not as frequent as factual errors, there are many stories in which the viewpoint and fundamental assumptions of the writer must be shared by the reader. Lacking such common ground the reader is left wondering why the story was included in a book titled "it looked good on paper".I don't recommend this book for someone who lacks familiarity in the areas discussed, as otherwise it has a high likelihood of leaving the reader with an inaccurate impression of past events.

This is one of a series of books with similar theme - historic tidbits that are funny, amazing and 'in theory at least' true! Great fun to read and perfect book to keep on hand as you can pick it up, read a chapter in a few minutes, and put it down without having to follow some great thread of storyline (each chapter is stand alone)

Very poor written book. I was mad at myself for buying it, let alone waste my time reading it. Pass this one by.
Like Oval Office Oddities, this book does need a fact check every now and again. But still it is a comical collection of ideas that these designers did not envision blowing up in their faces. Yes, On paper their theories were sound. In R & D, they all did not work out. It gives a humorous look into many great plans of architecture, transportation (i.e.: the Pinto), aviation (i.e.: Spruce Goose), marine vessels, medicine that did not hold up in the real world.For example:* The Tacoma Narrows Bridge--built to collapse: the designer, same guy who built the Golden Gate in San Francisco, not only used faulty materials, he did not account for wind flow through the under beams of the bridge and the design caused one poor dog it's life.* The lead water pipes of Rome - they knew about lead poisoning as far back as 2000 BC, so this may have been the cause of soo many cooky emperors.* The Leaning Tower of Pisa - clay and unstable bedrock don't make good building foundations.* Kudzu Vines - one can see these anywhere. It's a fast-growing Chinese and Japanese climbing vine, and 1876 it was brought to Philadelphia for an exhibition and never left, ultimately spreading to seven million acres across the southern U.S.Again, much of this book compiles military type weaponry and machines that never quite made it out of R & D. Many of the intentions were of good nature and optimistic, but doomed to fail from the start.
Not exactly what it advertised. Some of the stories seem like screeds against something the author didn't like. For example, there's a story on how the Concorde was bad. But the Concorde flew successfully for a very long time. It had problems, but it wasn't a case of something that didn't work; it worked well but eventually wasn't economical. There are other stories of things which worked until technology passed them by.There's a large section about military boondoggles, which is fish-in-a-barrel for a book like this.As another commenter wrote, stories do have errors which someone with a knowledge base can catch. The story about the adoption of the M-16 omits that the jamming problems were a result of the Army requiring a change in the powder charge without redesigning the mechanism to account for the different forces produced.The egregious sins, though, are against spelling and grammar. It's a poorly-edited book. Note: I read an eBook edition, not the physical edition.
This book's 350 pages contain 67 individual stories. The authorship of these stories is shared among 12 individuals. As can be expected in a book like this, some stories are more interesting than others, depending on the reader's preferences for either the subject matter or a given author's writing style. Nevertheless, all of these stories have varying degrees of tongue-in-cheek-ness, which makes for very pleasant light reading. The writing style is generally quite engaging, often humorous and accessible to a wide readership.In a book with such a wide-ranging scope, errors may creep in which, depending on the reader's knowledge base, may be easily missed. For me, two errors stand out. They are both in the chapter entitled "Overcooking with Atoms". On page 47 can be found the statement: "sodium reactors never deplete their fuel supply, so the SRE could ... provide uninterrupted power without any need for additional uranium". This statement is misleading since it implies that the sodium reactor is a perpetual motion machine, i.e., it will run forever without any new fuel - like an automobile that will run forever on a single gas tank. This is obviously wrong; better wording should have been chosen. The other error pertains to the use of an incorrect term: on page 49, the term "radio nucleotides" is used when the correct term is "radionuclides".Aside from these minor quibbles, this is a book that can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone.
