I am a shoot-em up kinda reader: Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Scott Horvath, et al. BUT, I loved this one! Having been to Venice twice (so far!), I was quite at home, and it made me wish I were there now. Morelli's writing is great; her attention to detail superb. I read The Gondola Maker first, liked it a lot, but this one is even better, much better! The plot rolls right along and has many twists and turns, but the description of the locale and the environment at the time is just outstanding.I don't want to praise too much, and have readers disappointed if they don't think it is as wonderful as I do, but I loved every word!
Having already read and enjoyed Ms. Morelli’s The Gondola Maker, I was eager to read The Painter’s Apprentice. I was not disappointed. Once again, Ms. Morelli crafted her prose with profound artistry; and I was transported back to Renaissance Venice, with all its majesty, pageantry, and oh yes, the Plague.As an artist, I particularly enjoyed the fascinating, detailed portrayal of the gilding technique, the pigment mixing mediums, and the wood panel preparations. Clearly, Ms. Morelli did her homework, but never did these details feel textbook or tutorial, but rather they are worked into the narrative seamlessly.I cheered for Maria Bartolini, the protagonist, whose work ethic and love for her father and her paramour remained steadfast despite the many hurdles and heartaches in her path.
I raced through this book, not because I was desperate to finish, but because I really wanted to know what was going to happen to Maria and her forbidden lover, Cristiano. Morelli's background as a historian shines through with details sprinkled in that draw the reader deep into the heart of Renaissance Venice. Readers of her previous novel, "The Gondola Maker," will recognize a familiar character in the painter Maria goes to work for. I love how Morelli tied the books together--definitely standalone, but a real treat for fans of her work.If you are a lover or know a lover of Italy, this is a fantastic read, well-paced, historically delightful and full of romantic suspense. Can't wait for her next novel!
Truly amazing writer. Morelli brings to life1501 Venice - the plague,, the artists' guilds, women's place (or lack of place) in the family and among the artists. Morelli's characters are vibrant; the scenery vividly described; the plague realistic depicted; and Venice, its canals and travel on gondolas exquisitely pictured. I had previously read Morelli's The Gondola Maker, equally as good as The Painter's Apprentice. Both highly recommended
I cannot say enough positive things that I loved. The characters were all so well described & enjoyable. The description of the canals, gondolas entice me to soon visit Venice. The knowledge of the pestilence is unimaginable. The love story is well done without being over dramatized. Discrimination, religion, thievery, all in one beautifully written story.
After finishing the wonderful story of The Gondola Maker, I couldn't wait to start The Painter's Apprentice. And boy, was it worth it! Maria's story moved me. Laughter and tears, action packed en so beautifully written. The sounds and smells of Venice drew me in from the start. The history kept me glued. I couldn't put this one down and spent 2 days in Venice, hardly slept or ate. It's a must read!
This is a wonderful historical novel that shows Laura Morelli's thorough knowledge of Venice, art history and history. Morelli's storytelling abilities match and even exceed the background knowledge that is evident throughout. I was so sorry when it had ended yet I have The Gondola Maker to look forward to reading. And although I travel to Venice a couple of times a year, now (as a historian) I definitely want to visit the lazaretti islands.Bravissimo!
I highly recommend this historical fiction. After reading The Gondola Maker, I immediately purchased The Painter's Apprentice. The vivid story telling takes the reader back to 16th century Venice. With the historic details of the emotion and pain of the plague, the reader is immersed in the turmoil of the time. The well developed characters and the historical accuracy had me turning page after page. A must read.
