Like this author’s other work I’ve read, she still knows how to tell a dramatic and emotional tale. The reader is sucked in despite the pitfalls and down sides to the book. I zoomed through inside 24 hours, even despite being at work for 9 hours of the day; it was that engrossing. The author keeps her skills at historical setting and details sharp. The harshness of battle and its effects see thorough exploration, not being softened for her readers. The tension of a territory constantly changing hands during such a harsh war comes through clearly. Sarah’s situation being caught between two sides makes the reader empathize with her and her struggle. As I mentioned, the emotional draw for this novel doesn’t let up. Despite some other drawbacks interwoven with this aspect of the book, I still found myself crying, smiling, and feeling rage at all the appropriate places. The author has a real talent for drawing her readers into the story and never letting them go. Not every writer can do this. Ms. James has a special talent at it.Now for those drawbacks… First off are our two main leads. They’re likable enough so that I can relate to them and be invested in their relationship (see emotional draw paragraph above). However, they are far too perfect. Constantly described as such, the reader is hit by a 2x4 in how many times this point is stressed. Brave, strong, gorgeous, pure, dignified, angelic… I mean, really?! Nobody is this perfect. And the point is driven home at least every other page…I also felt the ending was drawn out far too long. We had the fantastic, suspenseful story going strong, like a runaway train on a downward grade. Climax hits, and the audience holds its breathe in anticipation of a great resolution. Then we get this book’s ending. The book drags its feet in giving us the closing scene, going from scene to scene expounding on how perfect our leads are and how they don’t feel like they deserve each other. It’s enough to make me grind my teeth in exasperation. The book excels in setting and emotional draw, even despite the character and ending drawbacks. Yet, ending the book on such a note is a big bummer as that’s the closing the reader is left with. I was also glad to see these characters leave my reading experience. I might have loved their romance, but the people themselves would not have been people I’d like to know in real life. Read for the emotions if nothing else, though. Those are powerful and suspenseful enough.
There wasn't anything about this story to draw me in. James's world doesn't feel authentic, Sarah Duvall comes across like a Mary Sue, and Douglas Benton is an infuriating sexist. In the first chapter, Douglas arrives at Sarah's house, looking to rest his weary men, and she tells him to leave. And he stands there, arguing with her! What a great romantic hero. I wanted to hit him over the head. In the second chapter, we learn Sarah is tight with General Lee and President Davis. In the third, we find out she has Union soldiers devising battle plans in her parlor. I couldn't take any more after that. For all I know, James was basing "Above and Beyond" on actual historic events; but to me, it felt too fantastic to be believed.
This is another great story with lots of imagery, intrigue, and intricate details. The words form pictures in your mind. My emotions ranged from anger, shock, surprise, fear, pure joy while reading. My heart raced, tears flowed, laughter bubbled. The characters are well defined, complex and marvelous. There are twists and turns. This would be a great book for an in depth discussion.I have read many books and genres in my lifetime. Some books are just fun to read. Some books you can read and learn something about the culture, place or people. Some you can identify areas of your life that need to be examined and changed. Some books you become so lost in the story that you are unaware of your surroundings. This book is all of that and more.Jessica James has a gift and shares it in this book. The words are like magic.
I bought this book last year and have only now read it. I have no idea what it was like to live during the Civil war.. I have no idea what it is like to make certain I have plenty in my pantry and barn for unannounced "visitors" at any time of day or night or for horses.I have no idea what it is like to have my neighbors rally against me in lynch mob fashion just because they disagree with me. This book put flesh to the history books I read in school. I will be the first one to admit, I am very isolated/pampered/spoiled in 2016! I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Everything was put in perspective, I trust. Thank you for such an engaging, insightful book.
Told mostly (I do believe) from the male point-of-view, this sweet (as in level of sex) historical romance novel reads smoothly and keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.Cocky, battle-ready, ladies' man and Confederate officer, Douglas Benton, meets his match in double-agent, bible-reading, friendless Union widow, Sarah Duvall.Over the course of the war they alternately annoy and intrigue one another while also saving the other's life on more than one occasion. Why I read it: Read the author's Facebook post about her excitement to be #1 on Amazon sales list. I've heard great things about her writing. I actually purchased her first novel years ago and allowed it to collect dust in my TBR file until I stashed that pile away ... somewhere. I'm cleaning upstairs today partly in an effort to find my copy of Shades of Gray. :DWhy I liked it: This girl writes TIGHT! I couldn't find an unneeded word anywhere. She has a great command of Southern dialogue and history. What I appreciated most: I didn't realize it was #1 in the Christian Historical Romance category when I purchased it. I'm not into religious novels so I was pleasantly surprised to find religious undertones scattered through the text without becoming overbearing or preachy.I would recommend it to: Anyone who loves novels about the South or the War Between the States.
Certainly more of a romantic novel than a tail of military battles. It was well written by someone with a great vocabulary. Scenes were well described and the author took time to develop the conclusion on Lori of just ending the story because the required number of words had been reached. A good Christian novel.
